Getting back at night

Back to the city is the U6 from Fröttmaning. After matches MVG adds extra trains for a dense service between the arena and the centre, but it publishes no fixed after-match timetable, and the station can be closed for a few minutes at a time when the platforms are too full. Remember your match ticket is not a fare: have your MVV ticket ready.

Match ends at 23:00A match ending at 23:00 (Champions League kick-offs are 21:00): walk to Fröttmaning and take the U6 towards Münchner Freiheit and Marienplatz. Monday to Thursday the U-Bahn runs until about 01:00 according to MVG, so do not linger; MVG does not publish an exact last U6 from Fröttmaning. On Friday-to-Saturday, Saturday-to-Sunday and pre-holiday nights the U6 runs all night every 30 minutes. In the city, night buses (N40 to N45) run hourly on weeknights; on weekend nights the N40 runs only between Münchner Freiheit and Kieferngarten.

Night bus N40 Münchner Freiheit → Kieferngarten not published Night bus on the north U6 corridor. On weekend nights it runs only between Münchner Freiheit and Kieferngarten because the U6 covers the rest. It does not stop at the stadium, so it matters only once you are on the U6. [source]

Queues at the station

Expect crowding: MVG warns of bottlenecks on the U-Bahn after big events and says Fröttmaning station is closed for a few minutes at a time whenever the platforms threaten to overflow, so you may wait outside on the Esplanade.

If you miss it

Take a taxi from the north or south stand, or wait a few minutes: trains keep leaving and the station reopens as the platform clears. After about 01:00 Monday to Thursday the U-Bahn has stopped and you will need a taxi or ride app.

How a visitor gets a ticket

In practice members only

In practice, Bayern home tickets go to members first: FC Bayern says that because of demand most games are exclusively for members, with members getting priority in the request draw. The only usual route for a non-member is the official Ticket Exchange, which the club says it 'usually' opens to all fans in the match week at the latest, depending on supply and demand. There is no guarantee. Joining the club (a paid membership) or official hospitality are the other routes.

Only buy through FC Bayern. The Ticket Exchange adds an advance-booking fee and a system fee, closes three hours before kick-off and is for home games only. The club does not recommend third-party resellers, and entry is checked against a valid match-day ticket.

Official channels only

We never link unofficial resellers: tickets bought there are cancelled at the gate, and in the UK reselling football tickets without the club’s authorisation is a criminal offence.

Getting there

Public transport

Take the U6 to Fröttmaning (towards Garching) and walk the Esplanade to the stadium. Unlike Dortmund or Frankfurt, your match ticket does not include public transport: the Arena says it gives no free travel on the MVV network, so buy a fare before you travel.

  1. From Hauptbahnhof or Ostbahnhof take any S-Bahn to Marienplatz, then the U6 towards Garching-Hochbrück; Fröttmaning is about 16 minutes from Marienplatz.
  2. Get off at Fröttmaning and follow the crowd along the Esplanade to the entrance gates.
  3. On match days MVG keeps the U6 at its regular 5-minute interval and holds extra trains on standby, using them as needed.
  4. On selected Bayern home games the club runs free shuttle buses from Donnersbergerbrücke; they are announced per match.

Driving and parking

Possible, but exit queues are long. Parking is barrier-free with number plate recognition: register your plate and pay online beforehand, and it is activated for exit on the day. Paying at the machines on match day can mean waiting around 30 minutes or more.

Taxi and ride-hailing apps

There are two large taxi stands at the stadium: the north stand behind the arena at the north coach parking, and the south stand at the foot of the Esplanade at the south coach parking. Roads around the arena are congested after the match, so a taxi is rarely faster than the U6.

Bags and documents

Bags up to DIN A4 may stay on the body. Larger backpacks and gym bags are not allowed; luggage storage is on the Esplanade and at the North Coach Parking, and you cannot leave bags at the entrance. Liquids, glass and metal flasks, selfie sticks and power banks over 100 g are also prohibited.

Documents: The pages we read do not mention a photo-ID check for adults at the gate. Since 2026-27 the ticket lives in the app, so charge your phone.

Where to stay

Area Why
Marienplatz / city centre The S-Bahn lines from the airport and Hauptbahnhof meet the U6 at Marienplatz, so the match is a single change away, about 16 minutes from Marienplatz to Fröttmaning.
Münchner Freiheit / Schwabing On the U6 itself, so you ride back without changing, and the night buses N40 and the weekend night U6 start from here.
Fröttmaning / Garching Beyond the arena on the same U6, so you skip the crowd heading to the centre. Few hotels and little to do in the evening.
